The flowers, all different, represent the blooms of each season. The inside of the vase is also painted: the golden yellow mezzotint enhances the ceramic and makes it suitable for display even without flowers.

The planter is suitable for holding ornamental plants, seasonal flowers or dried inflorescences and can also be positioned as a centrepiece.

A curiosity: in this type of decoration, the blue of the background is added as a fill, also with the tip of the brush.

On Saturday 24th May the 50th edition of the 100 km del Passatore will start from Florence (at 3:00 pm), the legendary ultramarathon “Florence-Faenza” that will see 3500 athletes competing on the roads of the Tuscan-Romagnolo Apennines, climbing up to the Passo della Colla and then descending towards Faenza. The top finishers are expected in Piazza del Popolo in Faenza already late on Saturday evening, but it is possible to complete the long race until 11 am on Sunday morning.

For many, the 100 km del Passatore is a challenge with themselves and crossing the finish line is a dream come true, but for some the goal is a top ten finish, chasing first place to write their name into the event’s roll of honor.

Also this year the winners of the King of the Mountains, that is the first woman and the first man to pass the Passo della Colla (913 meters above sea level at 48 km) and reach Faenza, will be awarded by the U.O.E.I. of Faenza with a majolica plate made by our workshop:

They are two plates decorated in Pavona with traditional Renaissance figures in the centre; they recall the ancient custom of paying homage to rulers with a portrait on ceramic.

All that remains for us to do is wish good luck to all the runners at the start of this fiftieth edition of the 100 km del Passatore!

In between visits, we at La Vecchia Faenza are always ready to welcome tour groups for a free guided tour of the vast majolica exhibition and workshop where our art pottery is created.

A ceramist will lead the group with explanations in English in Italian; we recommend at least 40 minutes for groups, but the schedule is flexible and you can easily shorten or lengthen the visit according to your needs.

Visits are always free; reservations are appreciated for groups.
Individual visitors have free access during the usual opening hours.

Giacinto Cerone. L’angelo necessario @ MIC Faenza

An exhibition dedicated to sculptor Giacinto Cerone (1957-2004), one of Italy’s most original and free sculptors, far from the groupings, schools, movements, styles or fashions of the moment, continues through April 27. The exhibition brings together about 45 sculptures of various materials (wood, ceramic, plastic, metal, marble, plaster, stone) and periods, as well as 35 drawings, grouped by thematic series or individual works with an emblematic character.

The Portrait of the Artist @ Museo Civico San Domenico Forlì

From 23 February to 29 June 2025, the San Domenico Museum in Forlì proposes the exhibition ‘The Portrait of the Artist’: from Narcissus to the selfie, the art of portraying one’s own face has spanned the centuries and has always represented for the artist a challenge, a risky self-tribute, a way of analysing oneself, but also an opportunity to reveal one’s emotions and talent.

Nedo Del Bene @ Palazzo Rasponi dalle Teste in Ravenna

From 22 February to 23 March 2025  Ravenna will host an art exhibition dedicated to  Nedo Del Bene, mosaicist, painter and illustrator who was born one hundred years ago in Sansepolcro and died in 2018 in Ravenna.

A lively and multifaceted artist, he chose Ravenna as his adopted city. His pictorial poetics is linked to figurative investigation, enriched by the sentiment and profound emotional suggestions of the ‘École de Paris’, which Del Bene approached during an important French sojourn.

In this somewhat crazy summer, which alternates very hot days with autumnal interludes, we put ourselves in the shoes of those who are on holiday on the Riviera Romagnola and are forced to give up some days at the beach due to the unstable weather.

Faenza + Brisighella in one day

If you are on holiday on the shores of Ravenna, in Milano Marittima, Cervia, Cesenatico, or even in Rimini, you can reach Faenza in less than an hour by car or train and visit it comfortably on foot. Piazza del Popolo, the International Museum of Ceramics, Palazzo Milzetti and… our shop with the laboratory where we decorate artistic ceramics according to tradition are some perfect ideas for spending a day discovering this corner of Romagna.

And if you have some time left, from Faenza in ten minutes you can reach Brisighella, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy located on the slopes of the Apennines, where among rolling hills and barren gullies you can taste delicious wines and the famous DOP oil, also for tasting.

They are eggs shaped by hand on the potter’s wheel and painted on majolica with handmade designs, each one different from the other.

What’s new in 2024 are the Eggs with Flowers

The idea for these eggs takes its cue from the basket weaves, as seen in the decoration at the base from which delicate flowers sprout, reminiscent of auspicious images.

There are of course also Traditional Eggs, where Peacock and Palmette soaring upward fill the surface of the eggs along with bright and cheerful colors.

We renovated the exhibition spaces

Partly because of the long tail of the May 2023 flood, partly because of the arrival of Laura Silvagni, our exhibition spaces are constantly changing, but always ready to welcome tourists and visitors.

Free guided tours of the exhibition at the workshop

If you are around Faenza with family or friends, or you are a group on an organized trip, come and visit our large exhibition and workshop where we decorate pottery, a decorator will guide you discovering traditional decorations, explaining how they are made and the characteristics of Faenza majolica.

You can combine a visit to our workshop with a visit to the prestigious International Museum of Ceramics in Faenza, where historical and contemporary pieces from around the world are preserved.

These are large, finely decorated ornamental plates, made over the more than 50-year history of our workshop. The first example – already included in our online shop – was painted in 2000 by Giovanni Pretolani, Laura Silvagni’s historic master.

The plate, with a diameter of 61.5 cm, was shaped by hand, smooth and slightly bent at the bottom on the outside. It has a dance scene in the center inspired by the painting “Le Plaisir pastoral” by Jean-Antoine Watteau, while 6 cartouches with small figurines of children can be seen on the brim.

Note how the decorations harmoniously combine figures inspired by Raphaelesque with new elements designed by Pretolani.

All the remaining spaces are filled with the brush tip with the blue color.

Faenza lends itself well to a day visit, for a coffee in Piazza del Popolo and a tour of the most important ceramic museum in the world, the MIC, where the exhibition “Galileo Chini. Ceramics between Liberty and Déco” is set up until 14 May, or discovering Italian Neoclassicism in Palazzo Milzetti.

Between one visit and another, it is worth stopping by ours historic shop in via Sant’Ippolito 23/A, where there is a large exhibition of our ceramic production inspired by the Faenza decorative styles which have made the history of majolica over the centuries, but also new ceramics on the theme of the seasonal period, such as these beautiful Easter eggs.

You will also be able to observe the ceramists at work in the laboratory: we decorate the ceramics according to the ancient Faenza majolica technique, just as it was done in Renaissance workshops!
