50 years of ceramics

20 October 2017 · Categoria Events

“I came to the ceramic craft almost by accident: in 1967 I found myself managing a ceramic shop without being a decorator. One of the first employees was Laura Silvagni… ”

These words of Gino Suzzi, founder of La Vecchia Faenza, well tell how our story began. Who could have imagined that young Laura, a few years later, would become Gino’s life partner and, since 2004, would take over La Vecchia Faenza’s guide? The plots of chance and destiny intertwined, giving rise to a reality made of passion for decoration and ceramics, in the wake of a glorious past that made Faenza famous in the world for its beautiful majolica.

Art Nouveau and Art Deco ceramics

30 March 2017 · Categoria Ceramiche artistiche

Spring is the season when nature renews itself. We too have decided to renew ourselves, alongside our production of traditional ceramics with some pieces inspired by Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles.

Unlike traditional ceramics, for which the designs and patterns are inspired by the pottery of the past, these are inspired by the paintings of the 20s and 30s of the twentieth century.

Source of inspiration were also the recent events and exhibitions at the International Ceramics Museum (MIC) of Faenza and the San Domenico Museum in Forlì, dedicated precisely to the liberty and deco styles. Two styles for the temporal proximity mingling into each other in a pleasant alternation of sinuous lines and square shapes.

Here you can observe two plates and three eggs painted with delicate colors and figures of romantic inspiration. The dishes, 30 cm in diameter, are one of the most common and representative forms of our ceramics; the eggs have been achieving in the vicinity of Easter and can become valuable and original centerpieces for your living rooms.

The first course depicts a cat in an imaginary garden. The cat, as well as a pet beloved, always fascinates and surprises for being wild but outgoing, smart and sweet at the same time. In the colorful ceramic eggs next to the plate, you can see two women in attitudes otherwise evocative of love and romance.

Raphaelesque: just made an amphora and a tray

31 January 2017 · Categoria Ceramiche artistiche

We have just completed two pieces meticulously decorated in the style Raffaellesco, one of the jewels of our production flowers.

anfora e vassoio raffaellesco, ceramica di Faenza pottery

The Raffaellesco Faenza is inspired by the pictorial style of Raffaello Sanzio, in particular for the purity of the human figures and for landscaping with grotesque, also known as Raphael (always inspired by the designs adopted by Raphael).

Our Raphaelesque is reworked in a very personal way by Silvagni workshop. It requires great precision and commitment to achieve very definite designs, in some cases miniaturized, such as rural scene on the back of the amphora. Read more >>

Italian pottery for United States customers

1 December 2016 · Categoria Ceramiche artistiche

Our online store brings artistic ceramics La Vecchia Faenza and Laura Silvagni to Italy and to United States.

A new Renaissance for the Faenza ceramic art

In the Renaissance, Faenza became famous for its ceramic art. Majolica produced in Faenza was successfully exported throughout Europe, so that “Faenza” and “tiled” have become synonymous in many languages, including French (faïence) and English (faience).

Armed with this glorious past, we propose the same goal now as then: bring our crafts in homes not only of Italians, but also of the Americans! We are aware that the market has become more fragmented and competitive, and also the clientele has changed: more careful and demanding, but also less willing to spend in the manner of a nobleman of the time. It’s funny to note how, in this scenario changed profoundly, we can bring the world a product radically traditional but eternal as our artistic ceramics thanks to modern sales channels, our e-commerce in the first place. Great ornamental plates decorated “A Pavona” with astorre

15 July 2016 · Categoria Ceramiche artistiche

We just made two large ornamental plates that share the size – 60 cm in diameter – the decorations in Pavona and Persian palmette styles, and the central figure: the Astorre.

The Astorre is an imaginary bird, typical of highly glazed pottery tradition, somewhere between a goshawk and a heron. It owes its name probably to Astorre Manfredi, lord of Faenza also known as Astorgio.

The first dish is decorated in a traditional manner: the two Astorri, bird with a long, twisted neck, have been reinterpreted by a fifteenth-century vase kept in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. In traditional symbolism, the trained animals plots represent the flow of divine energy in the forms, life, growth, continuity.

On board, the Pavona decoration is inspired by same historical period and developed with some characteristic features: the bright colors, the withered leaves around the peacock feather, a pyramidal flame.

Bernard Rackham describes these patterns in its “Masterpieces of Italian majolica” (1976, p. 32): “With stunning security, the potters of Faenza used countless reasons – figures, coats of arms, flowers or leaves – to enrich with their variety of rhythm and color plastic forms that are in themselves full of magnitude.” Read more >>
